Michelangelo Montreal and his masterpiece
In 1922, a young Italian man named Giovanni Tondo moved to Montreal, Canada, to pursue his dream of becoming a great sculptor. With his natural talent and relentless perseverance, he quickly became one of the city's most prominent artists.
Tondo created many sculptures, including the "Montreal Girl" and "Mother and Child" sculptures. But his masterpiece was a huge statue of "Sacred Heart" which was installed in Westminster Park in Montreal in 1934.
The "Sacred Heart" statue is a 30-ton marble statue depicting Christ crucified on the cross. This statue is one of the most important religious works of art in Canada due to its large dimensions and detailed details.
Today, however, Giovanni Tondo's name is less well known. The "Sacred Heart" statue has also been damaged due to wear and tear and neglect by the Montreal municipality.
