Mark Carney's government survives confidence vote
Mark Carney’s minority government passes first budget confidence vote; NDP support prevents government collapse 🇨🇦
The Liberal minority government led by Mark Carney passed its first major test in parliament last night.
During the vote on the 2025 federal budget, the Conservatives’ motion to reject the government’s economic plan was defeated by 198 votes to 139.
The NDP, Bloc Québécois and Greens voted in favor, allowing the government to continue and avert a potential collapse.
Interim NDP leader Don Davis said his party opposes the Conservatives’ proposed drastic cuts to public spending:
> “The Conservatives want to drastically cut government spending, while people need more public services.”
Conservative leader Pierre Poiliever, in contrast, insisted that the proposed budget was “irresponsible” and would raise taxes and inflation.
He said:
> “Every dollar of government spending comes out of Canadians’ pockets, and this budget puts more pressure on families.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney said after the vote:
> “I’m pleased that the responsible parties made the right decision. Our country is at a time when stability and cooperation are more important than ever.”
Despite the victory, the government still faces more challenges. Another vote on the Bloc Québécois amendment is scheduled for today, which could be a new test for the government.
