Food prices continue to outpace inflation in Canada
Despite the slowdown in inflation, food prices in Canada are still higher than the general inflation rate. In particular, the price of beef has increased significantly.
According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, the price of fresh and frozen beef has increased by 9.2% compared to last year.
Overall, store-bought food prices rose 2.4 percent in September from a year earlier, higher than the country's overall inflation rate of 1.6 percent.
This growth rate was the same as the previous month, when food prices also rose 2.4 percent annually in August.
Including food purchased from restaurants, the overall cost of food has increased by 2.8% over the past year.
Some food staples have notably increased in price, such as fresh or frozen beef (+9.2 percent), edible fats and oils (+7.8 percent), and eggs (+5.0 percent).
Some items have become cheaper over the past 12 months, such as seafood (-4.9%), nuts and seeds (-0.9%) and fish (-0.3%).
