With calls for Trudeau's resignation, Poilievre's Conservatives hold 26-point advantage over Liberals: Nanos
Pierre Polliot, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, has ended 2024 with a new record in popular support. According to the latest poll by Nanos Research, the Conservatives have 47% support, 26% ahead of Justin Trudeau's Liberals who have only 21% support. Jagmeet Singh's New Democrat Party is also close to the liberals with 17% support.
Pressure for Trudeau's resignation
This survey was conducted in a situation where Justin Trudeau is facing many requests from his party members to resign. After the surprise resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland last fall, Jagmeet Singh announced her party was prepared to end its support for the minority Liberal government in the new year. Meanwhile, Pouliot has called for a vote of no confidence in the Trudeau government.
Over the holidays, members of the Ontario, Atlantic and Quebec Liberal factions increasingly called for Trudeau's resignation, and the domestic crisis appears to have affected public confidence in the Liberals.
Trudeau compared to Polio and Singh
According to polls, Pollio has a 40 percent approval rating as the prime minister's choice, ahead of Trudeau (17.4 percent) and Singh (13.9 percent). Meanwhile, 18% of the participants have not yet made a decision in this regard.
Data analyst Nick Nanos believes the Liberals will need a "big mistake" from the Conservatives to close the gap. He added that the Liberals are not only facing an internal crisis, but are also grappling with a wave of political change now led by Polio.
Focusing on the economy and employment in 2025
According to Nanos, jobs and the economy will be the main issues for voters in 2025. Concerns in this field have reached the highest level in the last four years during the last month.
With President-elect Donald Trump taking office on January 20 and the possibility of tariffs, Canadians are demanding a clear plan from federal party leaders to boost the economy and create jobs.
Survey method
This survey was conducted by random telephone method among 1014 Canadians over 18 years of age. The results of this data are reliable 19 times out of 20 times with an accuracy of 3.1%.
