U.S. driver makes wrong turn to Canadian border, gets arrested for unlawfully possessing a gun
A 62-year-old American man who mistakenly crossed the Canadian border due to misdirecting his GPS device is now facing gun-related charges.
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers said the commercial truck driver was heading to Michigan on Sunday with a commercial shipment that was mistakenly diverted to the Canadian border.
The Border Patrol said the driver did not have the necessary documents to cross into Canada and was asked to return to the United States. In this return, he admitted to having a gun.
Upon further investigation, officers located a Hi-Point C9 semi-automatic pistol in 9mm caliber and 40 rounds of ammunition.
Officers said an investigation revealed the driver, who is from Louisiana, was not authorized to carry a firearm due to a criminal record.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was arrested and later turned over to the New York State Police, police said. He has been charged with illegal possession of weapons.
"Our CBP officers are always vigilant while screening travelers entering the United States," Port Regional Director Gaetano Cordon said in a statement Monday.
"Together with our state and local partners, we were able to arrest this criminal and collect a gun off our streets," he added.
