Trump increases tariffs on Canadian goods by another 10%
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he would increase tariffs on Canadian goods by another 10 per cent, citing “irresponsible behavior by the Government of Ontario” and the continued airing of an anti-tariff ad on US networks.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“Due to the hostile and misrepresentative actions of Ontario, I will be increasing tariffs on Canada by another 10 per cent.”
He said the Ontario government should have immediately stopped the ad, but it continued to air during the World Series.
The campaign, which cost more than $75 million, used images and a speech by Ronald Reagan in 1987 to warn of the negative consequences of tariff policies.
Trump had previously suspended trade talks with Canada over the ad. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, in contrast, announced that the ad would be suspended by Monday, but insisted that the first two games of the World Series should provide an opportunity to see it.
Trump called the move “hostile” and ordered the new tariffs while flying to Malaysia for the ASEAN summit.
It is not yet clear what group of goods the new tariffs will cover or when they will take effect.
The New York Times reported in a review of the video that while parts of Reagan’s speech have been moved, the core content has not been changed. However, Trump has claimed that the video is “distorted and possibly created by artificial intelligence.”
