Trudeau hosting Caribbean leaders to talk trade, climate and Haiti crisis
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is hosting a summit in Ottawa on Wednesday, welcoming twelve leaders from the Caribbean region. The two-day summit aims to strengthen Canada's relationships with these countries.
The Caribbean Community, also known as CARICOM, consists of 15 countries and five overseas territories, spanning from the Bahamas to Trinidad and Tobago, excluding Cuba. CARICOM collaborates on various initiatives, including promoting inclusive economic growth and addressing climate change. However, their recent focus has primarily been on the situation in Haiti.
Ariel Henry, the de facto Prime Minister of Haiti, will be making his first visit to Canada since assuming the role in August 2021, following the assassination of the country's president, even though he had not been elected to the position.
