This 1970s varsity jacket from Ingersoll, Ont., was found in an Australian thrift shop

Joe Winkler, an Australian, bought a vintage Ingersoll, Ontario, Broomball (a hockey-like sport) jacket at a second-hand store in Melbourne. The yellow jacket with blue sleeves and the name “Wally” on the chest was the crest of the 1970s Ingersoll Broomball team.

Unraveling Wally’s Mystery:
Curious about the jacket’s authenticity, Winkler posted on the Ingersoll Facebook group asking for help in identifying the original owner. Less than a day later, family and friends of Wallace Clayton (Wally), who died in 2011, responded!

Memories of Wally:

Wally’s son, Brad Clayton, said he donated the jacket to the Ingersoll Goodwill store after his father died.
“Wally was a great guy,” said Alan Jett, Wally’s teammate in the 1970s. We played broomball every week and then had a beer!”

Jacket’s mysterious journey to Australia:

Scott Lauch, director of Goodwill Ontario, speculates that the jacket was either purchased by an Australian tourist or shipped to Australia through an online sale.

Brad Clayton is happy that his father’s jacket is being reused: “It’s a piece of our family history!”

Interesting fact:
Broomball is unknown in Australia, but Joe Winkler has now become a fan of the sport with this discovery!
