Summer McIntosh breaks record at U.S. Open; one step closer to world record
Canada's Summer McIntosh won the 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. Open by more than 15 seconds.
She not only won the race in 3:55.37 in Texas on Thursday night, but also set a new U.S. Open record.
McIntosh, a three-time Olympic champion, had a significant lead over her closest competitors; American Anna Pepelowski was second in 4:10.55, and Emma Wyant was third in 4:11.25.
The previous U.S. Open record was held by American Katie Ledecky of 3:56.81, set in Fort Lauderdale last April.
McIntosh, a Toronto native, swam just over a second slower than her world record of 3:54.18, set in Victoria last year.
The competition continues until Saturday.
