Strike averted at 17 No Frills stores in Ontario
The union announced that Unifor has reached a tentative agreement on behalf of approximately 1,300 No Frills workers across Ontario, averting a strike that was set to begin in less than 24 hours.
The union had announced the deadline for the strike on Thursday and demanded higher wages and better working conditions for the employees of 17 stores. The job action could start on Monday.
"None of the Frills workers knew that the public was supporting their fair share of Loblaw's huge profits," said Unifor Local 414 President Gord Currie.
The 17 stores include locations in Toronto, Whitby, Ont., Niagara Falls, Ont. and other places. Unifor previously cited profit increases at Loblaw amid rising costs of living as reasons for its wage demands, saying workers are fed up with the gap between wages and company earnings.
No Frills workers - most of whom are part-time - will now vote on the trial contract from Monday to Saturday. Details of the deal were not released due to the upcoming vote.
