Metro Vancouver residents were fined $166,000 for defying water restrictions

About $166,000 in fines are being issued to Metro Vancouver residents who don't follow water restrictions imposed this summer.
Of the 21 municipalities, one electoral district and one First Nations that make up Metro Vancouver, more than half issued fines ranging from $100 to $500 to residents who violated water restrictions on Aug. 4. issued
They banned all lawn watering and only allowed trees, shrubs, and flowers to be watered by hand, soaker hose, or drip irrigation. In total, municipal bylaw officers, who set their own fines, also issued more than 1,000 notices to people in violation of the restrictions, which were lifted on October 15.
The fines and warnings show how hard cities are trying to conserve water for residents during a record drought, as well as hundreds of property owners who are defying calls for help to ease the crisis.
It warns that drought increases the risk of flooding and damages
The cold arrival of autumn has not removed the impact of British Columbia's months-long drought.
"As climate change impacts our region's water supply, using water year-round is the right thing to do regardless of the potential monetary penalty," Metro Vancouver Water Committee chair Malcolm Brodie said in a statement.
