Princess of Wales speaks of ‘rollercoaster’ cancer recovery
Catherine, Princess of Wales, described her recovery from cancer as a “roller coaster” in a candid interview on Wednesday, describing the ups and downs and difficult times she has endured during her treatment.
Catherine, the wife of Britain’s Prince William, announced in March last year that she had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer. After undergoing a course of preventive chemotherapy, she announced in January that her disease was in remission and has since gradually returned to official duties.
The 43-year-old princess told patients, volunteers and staff at a cancer support centre at Colchester Hospital in eastern England on Wednesday that life after cancer treatment is not as easy or smooth as one might expect.
“It’s a roller coaster, not a smooth ride. You expect everything to go well after treatment, but it’s not. It has its ups and downs and having places like this and support networks – whether it’s through creative pursuits, singing or gardening – is really valuable and I’m glad this community has it.”
“People often put on a brave face and put on a show of resilience, but the reality is that it’s really hard after treatment,” Catherine added. “You’re not under the care of a team and you still can’t go back to your normal life at home.”
The mother-of-three, who has three young children, also pulled out of the Royal Ascot race last month as she continues to recover and gradually return to royal duties.
Meanwhile, her father-in-law, King Charles III, 76, announced in early 2024 that he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer. Although he has returned to public duties, he is still undergoing treatment.
