Police release bodycam video of officer-involved incident at Hindu temple protest in Brampton, Ont.
Accusations and defenses:
A video of a police officer confronting a man who appears to be wielding a baton has gone viral on the internet.
Peel Regional Police released the officer's body camera video and said the officer acted "within the lawful execution of his duties."
Police say that as tensions rose at the protest site, the decision was made to confiscate any equipment that could be used as a weapon.
According to the police, the released videos of the protesters show the use of flags and sticks as weapons.
Results:
Several people have been charged in connection with the protests on November 3 and 4.
An off-duty police officer seen at one of the protests has been suspended and is under investigation.
Peel Regional Police announced that they have formed a team to investigate "any crimes" that occurred during the protests.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, along with Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and Mississauga Mayor Caroline Parrish, condemned the violence.
The reason for the protests:
According to the Sikhs for Justice group, Khalistan supporters who want independence for Sikhs in India objected to the presence of Indian officials who visited the temple and provided consular services.
