Plans proposed by Canadian senators to solve the challenges of international students
A group of Canadian senators, members of the Independent Senators Group, including "Ratna Omidvar," "Yuen Pau Woo," "Hassan Yussuff," and former senator "Sabi Marwah," published a report on September 20th. This report contains a series of proposals and reforms aimed at addressing the challenges faced by international students in Canada. The primary objectives of these proposals are to improve the situation of international students in the country, especially in dealing with issues such as high tuition fees and exploitation.
In a statement provided by Senator Ratna Omidvar, it is mentioned that the international student program in Canada has been quite successful. However, international students continue to face various challenges, including high tuition fees and inadequate support.
The report also highlights the changes in the population of international students in Canada. For example, the number of international students in 2022 has reached approximately 807,750, which is more than four times higher than in 2008.
The senators attribute this increase in the number of international students to the Federal Economic Action Plan of 2011, which included budget provisions for an international education strategy. The goal of this strategy was to double the number of international students in Canada from 239,131 in 2011 to over 450,000 in 2022.
The report also underscores the importance of supporting international students in dealing with current financial and social challenges in Canada. It highlights that international education contributes over $22 billion to Canada's economy in 2018 and has filled more than 218,000 job positions.
Regarding the challenges that international students may face, the report mentions the sudden increase in tuition fees due to a lack of public budget. These tuition fee hikes have occurred in Ontario, causing international students to incur higher expenses.
In summary, the senators emphasize the importance of creating favorable conditions for international students in Canada and have presented proposals for improving their situation.
