Canada's immigration minister: One-click citizenship oath is worth checking out
The new Minister of Immigration continues to explore a controversial option that would allow new Canadians to take their citizenship oath with the click of a button, but there is no immediate plan for its implementation.
In February, the government called for public feedback on the idea of allowing new Canadians to commemorate their citizenship with a simple click instead of a virtual or in-person ceremony.
New regulations were expected to be in place by June 2023, but the government has been silent about its plans since then. Mark Miller, the Minister of Immigration, announced on Tuesday that the department is still examining the issue, and he believes it's a good idea.
He added that this is especially crucial for individuals living in remote or rural communities who would have to travel long distances to take their oath, making it a necessity.
Earlier this year, Sean Fraser, the former Minister of Immigration, floated this idea as a temporary option to help individuals waiting for their citizenship. This change is expected to save time for individuals waiting for up to three months.
Even with virtual ceremonies in place, as of July 23, there were still 68,287 individuals on the waiting list to take their oath and gain all the benefits of Canadian citizenship.
