Ontario man fined for long-term camping on public land
A Red Lake, Ontario man has been fined $2,500 for violating the Crown Land Act.
Jade McLachlin pleaded guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice to failing to vacate her campsite after the 21-day grace period.
⛺ Overstaying her stay
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, McLachlin stayed at a campsite near Corallen Lake from June 2024 to the spring of 2025.
She moved her campsite to another location in June 2025 but still stayed there for more than 21 days, which is again against the law.
⛺ What is the 21-Day Rule?
By law, Canadian residents can camp for free on Crown land for up to 21 days per year.
The case was heard online by Justice of the Peace Madeline Powell on June 25.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has also asked the public to call the TIPS hotline to report natural resource-related problems or provide information about unresolved cases.
