Meta offers Canadian Facebook users $51 million to settle lawsuits in 4 provinces

Meta's proposed multimillion-dollar settlement sends a message to other companies about the importance of paying attention to the country's privacy laws, says a lawyer representing Canadians in a class-action lawsuit against the social media giant.
Meta is offering $51 million to settle a four-state lawsuit over Facebook's "Sponsored Stories" advertising program, which ran from 2011 to 2014 and used people's names and photos without their knowledge.

Christopher Rahn, a partner at the Vancouver law firm Branch MacMaster who represented the plaintiffs, said the big social media companies are not usually based in Canada but still expect to do business here.
"It's important for them to consider the privacy rights of people living in these provinces in Canada before they start working here," he said.
Companies need to take a closer look at Canada's legal landscape, Rohn said, "so that residents of these provinces are protected as our legislators and courts want them to be."
A lawsuit filed by a woman in 2019 spread out of province to include residents of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador.
