Manitoba man wins $40M Lotto Max jackpot, among top 5 jackpots in province's history
Matthew Tanas, from Hamiota, 280 kilometers west of Winnipeg, won $40 million in the Dec. 3 Latomax lottery. His ticket was one of the two winning tickets in the 80 million dollar jackpot and the other ticket was sold in the province of Quebec.
The Thanas prize is the fourth largest lottery prize in Manitoba history.
He bought the ticket through the Lotto Spot app in Alberta, where he works as a big game guide. The winning numbers were: 9, 14, 21, 26, 29, 32 and 41.
Thanas said Thursday that he plans to use some of the money for his children's college expenses and help them in other ways.
"We want to get some reliable cars for our kids to make sure they're safe," he said.
Thanas also announced that he would buy a new truck and travel to Nova Scotia to visit his sister. "We're probably going to see people flock to Hamiota!" he joked about the impact the win would have on his community.
