Man shot and killed by police during hostage incident on Furby Street: Winnipeg police
Winnipeg police say they shot and killed a man who was holding several people hostage in an apartment on Forby Street just after noon Thursday. According to Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smith, a 19-year-old woman was being held hostage on the third floor of the building by a gunman and officers were dispatched to the location at 25 Forby Street. . The hostage-taker had locked the woman, two other adults and a three-year-old child in a suite. Crisis negotiation and tactical teams were dispatched to the scene, and after a few hours, the 33-year-old woman and child were freed or escaped unharmed. The 23-year-old man also escaped from the balcony. As time went on, concerns about the safety of the hostages grew, Smith said, and eventually a tactical rescue team entered the suite. During this operation, the hostage taker was shot and died. The Independent Investigations Unit is investigating the incident, and the hostage-taker's name has not been released, but Smith said he is a 52-year-old man with an extensive criminal record.
