Lockdown of North York High School after false reports of machete use
North York High School in Toronto, Canada is temporarily closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 23 and 24, 2024. The closures came after false reports of a masked man carrying a machete.
Police officers were dispatched to the school around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a masked person with what appeared to be a machete in his hand. After searching the school, the police found no evidence of anyone with a machete.
North York High School said in a statement that the closure was to ensure the safety of students and staff. The school said the police investigation is ongoing and that students and staff should contact police immediately if they see any suspicious activity.
This incident has raised many concerns about the safety of schools in Canada. In recent months, there have been several violent incidents in Canadian schools. In November 2023, a 14-year-old high school student in Montreal, Canada, attacked and injured another student with a knife.
The Government of Canada is considering ways to increase the security of schools in Canada. The government has announced that it plans to allocate more funds for school security.
