Hockey Canada picks up the pieces after another quarterfinal exit at world junior
For the second year in a row, Canada's national under-20 hockey team lost in the quarterfinals of the World Championship and withdrew from the competition. This time, Canada lost to the Czech Republic 4-3.
According to Scott Salmond, senior vice-president of Hockey Canada's high performance program and operations, the failure is his direct responsibility. Expressing his disappointment and apology, he emphasized that the team's poor performance in scoring goals and disciplinary problems played a major role in this failure.
Canada managed to score only 13 goals in five games, which was only two more than the Kazakhstan team. Also, the team recorded the worst shooting percentage in the tournament at 6.34%. In addition, Canada had the most penalties and trailed the game on 27 occasions in shorter conditions.
This failure has again raised questions about the strategy and management of Canada's youth national team and indicates the need for a serious review of the team's preparation and performance plans.
