Here’s what’s open and closed this Labour Day
Labour Day is here again, and that means many services across Canada will be closed. Here's what's open and what's closed:
Government Offices
All federal services, including Service Canada centres, passport offices and other government offices, will be closed on the holiday (September 1).
Provincial government offices are also closed.
Municipal Services
Most municipal services will be closed, but the details vary by city.
For example, Calgary is closing all gyms, indoor pools, fitness centres and some art and animal services. However, public golf courses will remain open.
Schools
Most schools start their school year on September 2, so it's best to avoid going the day before.
Banks
Most major banks will be closed on Labour Day, but ATMs and online and mobile services will remain open.
Grocery stores
Most grocery chains are closed on Monday, although some locations may have limited hours. In-store pharmacies and other services may also be closed even if the store is open.
Canada Post
Canada Post observes this holiday; therefore, mail pickup and delivery will not be available. However, private post offices may be open at the discretion of the owner.
Retail stores
Some provinces do not allow stores to operate on holidays, so hours will vary from country to country.
Large shopping malls often change their hours; some, like the Rideau Centre in Ottawa or the Eaton Centre in Toronto, will be open, but others will be closed. In either case, it's best to call before you go.
Public transportation
Usually, the city's transit system operates on a holiday schedule on Labour Day, meaning limited hours and routes.
For example, the Toronto Transit Commission announced that all lines will operate on Sunday hours on Monday, with the exception that services will start at approximately 6 a.m.
It's best to check your city's transit system announcements for more details.
