Helmets for deaf and hard of hearing players were unveiled
AT&T and Gallaudet University have collaborated to develop a specialized football helmet for deaf or hard of hearing players that communicates through sign language. Both organizations, based in Washington, unveiled this new technology for deaf and hard of hearing students on Friday. This technology enables coaches to view the game on a tablet from the sidelines and then display relevant information and visuals inside the defensive helmet.
Dr. Roberta Cordano, the President of Gallaudet University, stated, "We approach the use of this technology in the same way that any other college football program trains and competes."
The final product is the result of nearly two years of collaboration between Gallaudet University and AT&T, aimed at bridging the participation gap for the deaf community with their 5G network.
Corey Anthony, Senior Vice President of Network Engineering and Operations at AT&T, added, "We've continuously worked with players and coaches to enhance the functionality of this helmet, incorporating their feedback along the way. We've also placed trust in employees who are deaf or hard of hearing throughout this process."
Anthony emphasized that this project represents one of the exciting and valuable endeavors that AT&T has pursued over the years.
