Grizzly bear attacks two hikers in British Columbia; trails on Mount McGregor closed
On Saturday, October 12, 2025, two hikers were attacked by a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs on the Farm Cabin Trail in the McGregor Region, northeast of Prince George, British Columbia. Both hikers were seriously injured and taken to hospital; one was in critical condition, but both are now in stable condition and are expected to recover.
After investigating the incident, BC Wildlife Conservation officials said the bear’s behavior was defensive and no action would be taken. However, in order to ensure public safety, the trails on McGregor Mountain, including the Pass Lake Trail, have been closed until further notice.
According to published statistics, from January to August 2025, there have been more than 400 reports of human-to-human encounters with grizzly bears in British Columbia. In 81 of these reports, conservation officers intervened, which unfortunately resulted in the deaths of 15 bears.
If you’re planning to hike in northern British Columbia, it’s a good idea to check the trails before you go to make sure they’re open or closed. Also, if the trails are open, be sure to take safety precautions and bring bear spray and warning devices.
