'Give us $600 and also we hate you': WestJet's new UltraBasic fare gets roasted online
Passengers are angry with WestJet because of the new "Ultra Basic" fare that has no facilities. Everyone seems to hate flying these days. Delays and cancellations, severe turbulence and even plane crashes have made the flight experience worse instead of better.
Perhaps that's what's fueled online criticism of WestJet's new "Ultra Basic" fare, where you just get on the plane and nothing else. The new option, announced Tuesday, doesn't allow passengers to check-in luggage. Take them into the cabin (unless you're flying overseas), select seats at the end of the plane, and they'll be the last people to board the plane. They also can't collect WestJet points. Even with all these restrictions, an "Ultra Basic" fare from Toronto to Calgary in late June costs about $650 round-trip.
When WestJet announced the fare, people started mocking it on social media. They said this fare means "give us $600 and we hate you" and "just a seat, shut up".
The morning after WestJet's announcement, Air Canada had happy news for passengers: free booze. Many people on the Internet pointed to the timing of this announcement by Air Canada and described it as excellent.
Not to be outdone, Porter, Canada's other major airline, has announced that it will always offer free wine and beer on its flights. It has been criticized for doing so. For example, Ryanair, the Irish airline, previously offered standing tickets and an extra charge for using the toilet.
