Dozens of Canadian supermarkets sued for 'maplewashing' (hiding Made in America labels)
Dozens of supermarkets in Canada have been accused of “maplewashing” their products — passing off American fruits and vegetables that have suddenly become a hot commodity in the wake of the trade war as domestic produce.
But despite the effort to deceive shoppers, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has not imposed any fines or penalties — a move that has angered many Canadians.
Canadians, who are calling for a boycott of American goods, have been furious over retailers’ attempts to hide “Made in America” labels with maple leaf symbols or other Canadian markings.
Cauliflower labeled Made in Canada but packaged as Made in the United States
Canadian shoppers are unhappy to find American products being marketed as Made in Canada.
In many Canadian stores, shelves of Canadian products were emptied while shelves full of American products remained, often at a discount to reduce inventory, as Canadians were reluctant to buy them.
While trade tensions between the two countries have eased somewhat and the threat of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States has been lifted, Canadians' desire to avoid anything red, white and blue has persisted.
Now, the news that some 45 stores across the country have been caught red-handed for their attempt to scam customers has been unbearable for some.
