Coca-Cola plans to supply Canada with 100% recycled plastic bottles
All 500-milliliter bottles of carbonated soft drinks like Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, and other similar brands produced by Coca-Cola in Canada will be fully made from recycled plastic until the end of 2024, with the exception of the cap and label. This decision is expected to save 3,000 tons of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic and reduce 7,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada in 2024 alone. This announcement was made by Coca-Cola Canada in a press release last week.
On the new bottle labels, there is a green line with the text "I'm 100% recyclable" – this is seen as a response to concerns by at least one environmental consultancy due to the misleading presence of non-recyclable caps and labels.
Curt Ritter, Deputy and Chief Sustainability Officer for Coca-Cola in Canada and the United States, has stated that the primary goal of this initiative is not only to reduce environmental impacts but also to address people's concerns about recycling, especially given reports that collected plastics for recycling often are not actually recycled. Ritter said, "This is a practical demonstration that recycling works."
Last year, Coca-Cola used recycled plastic for Dasani water bottles and introduced recycled bottles for carbonated soft drinks in select cities in the United States and some European countries. The company's goal by 2030 is to have 50% of its packaging made from recycled materials and to recycle one bottle or can for each one it produces.
