Canadian rowers won three canoe/kayak sprint gold medals at the Pan Am Games.

Canada rapidly increased its gold medal count on Friday at the Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile. Kayaker Michelle Russell claimed the title in the K1 500-meter event, and was soon followed by Ian Gaudet and Simon McTavish, who won gold in the K2 500-meter men's race, and Alex Plomteux and Craig Spence, who also secured gold in the C2 500-meter men's event.
Canada now has 40 gold medals, which is five more than they achieved in the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima.
Michelle Russell, hailing from Fall River, N.S., stopped the clock at 1 minute and 51.25 seconds to secure her fourth professional Pan Am medal. The 31-year-old athlete was a member of the women's kayak four team that claimed Canada's first gold in the 2015 Toronto Games and later added silver medals in individual and doubles events.
In canoeing, 23-year-old Alex Plomteux from Lac-Beauport, Quebec, and 28-year-old Craig Spence from Dartmouth, NS, reached the podium with a time of 1:42.12. Additionally, on Friday, the Canadian women's K4 500 team won a silver medal, and Sofia Jensen added a bronze in the women's C200 event.
