Canada's first electric fire engine was unveiled in Vancouver

The city of Vancouver is now hosting Canada's first electric firetruck, named "Engine 1," which was unveiled outside Firehall No. 1 in Stratcona on Tuesday.

Mayor Ken Sim stated, "Our fire service is taking significant steps towards sustainability. This environmentally-friendly vehicle has the potential to save up to one ton of gasoline consumption annually, which is truly remarkable."

Tyler Moore, Deputy Chief of the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, commented, "The Rosenbauer RTX, manufactured in Austria, was procured by the city at a cost of $1.8 million, making it between $300,000 to $500,000 more expensive than a diesel engine. This vehicle boasts various features aimed at enhancing the safety of firefighters."

The narrow firetruck, with a width of 2.3 meters, can easily navigate tight spaces. It covers approximately 100 kilometers on a full charge and is equipped with an onboard diesel charger for recharging if needed. The vehicle is larger, more robust, and quieter, providing better communication capabilities. Its charging infrastructure is installed at the Stratcona firehall, and maintenance facilities for the city's fleet have been added.
