Canada's Ethan Katzberg wins Olympic gold in hammer throw
Hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg of Nanaimo, British Columbia, won the event in emphatic fashion with an Olympic record throw of 84.12 meters.
He faced no serious challenge during the competition and won Canada's first gold medal in the event.
His nearest competitor, the reigning world champion, won the silver medal with a throw of 82.28 meters.
No other thrower could reach the record of 80 meters.
Bense Halas from Hungary won the silver medal with a throw of 79.97 meters and Mykhailo Kokhan from Ukraine won the bronze medal with a throw of 79.39 meters.
Rowan Hamilton of Chilliwack, British Columbia, who was second to Katzberg in the preliminaries, finished ninth with a throw of 76.59 meters.
