Canada's Entertainment Tonight (ET) is turning off the lights after 18 seasons

The popular Canadian entertainment program "Entertainment Tonight (ET) Canada" has come to an end after 18 seasons. This announcement was made by the Canadian media company Corus Entertainment.
In a statement released on Thursday, September 27th, on the company's website, it was stated, "The rising production costs of a daily entertainment news program in a challenging advertising landscape have led to the decision to conclude this program. We appreciate the efforts of our dedicated team over the years and are aware of the impact of this decision on them."
A representative of Corus told CBC News that the final episode of the series aired on October 6th, with repeats continuing until October 31st on global television. The cancellation of "Entertainment Tonight" will not affect Corus' commitment to producing Canadian content in compliance with the regulations set by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
The website and social media platforms associated with "Entertainment Tonight (ET) Canada" will also be closing down. The representative refrained from commenting on the number of people who would become unemployed due to the program's conclusion but mentioned that the program's hosts have been affected by this decision. The network stated that there are no plans for another entertainment news program.
The one-hour format of "Entertainment Tonight (ET) Canada," which focused on celebrity news, film and television updates, and had a magazine-style approach, first aired on the Global TV network, owned by Corus Entertainment, in 2005. The show was hosted by Canadian media personality Cheryl Hickey and, from 2022 onwards, featured Sangita Patel as one of the main hosts, along with Carlos Bustamante, Keshia Chante, and Morgan Hoffman.
The decision to end the production of "Entertainment Tonight" will now leave "ETalk" as the only primary entertainment news program in Canada.
Andria Grava, the founder and CEO of the entertainment advertising company "Touchwood PR," emphasized that "Entertainment Tonight (ET) Canada" provided a Canadian perspective on various entertainment matters and produced distinctive content. She added that the demise of the program, amidst significant changes in the media industry, would shift the focus of expensive advertising towards Canadian-centric media and emerging Canadian projects.
Grava stated, "Although we share a common language with the United States and share pop culture, we are still Canadian and have a different perspective."
The program featured long-established relationships that had been built over the years. For instance, Sangita Patel would stand on the red carpet and conduct interviews, while Cheryl Hickey would engage in conversations with various individuals. They had become well-known to celebrities over the years, creating a powerful brand.
