Canada Post presents union with 'framework' to reach deal as strike continues
Canada Post has presented the union representing about 55,000 striking postal workers with a "framework" for reaching negotiated settlements.
A statement issued Sunday said the framework includes proposals to increase flexibility in Canada Post's delivery model and represents "movement on other key issues" in the labor dispute heading into the holiday season.
Canada Post hopes that these proposals will "rekindle negotiations" and that the parties can reach a final agreement with the support of mediators.
The statement also emphasized that Canada Post understands the impact of the nationwide strike by members of the Canadian Postal Workers Union across the country and that the company remains committed to negotiating new collective agreements.
The aforementioned framework was presented to the union on Sunday.
The action comes after the union filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Commission over the firings of striking workers, which it considers an "intimidation tactic" that violates Canada's labor laws.
No details were provided on the extent of the layoffs, which Canada Post has temporarily announced.
