British Columbia, provider of Canada's first cervical cancer home test and self-screening
Residents of British Columbia will soon be able to perform a self-screening test for cervical cancer at home and send it to a laboratory for testing. Premier David Abbey announced Tuesday morning that about 200 people in this province are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year. . Doctors in British Columbia are looking for ways to improve detection of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer.
Later this month, residents of the province will be able to go online and request a self-screening test, take it at home and send it to a lab for testing.
The test will be available to women between the ages of 25 and 69 from January 29.
"By offering cervical screening, primary HPV screening and self-screening across the province, we're removing barriers to access to care and giving people the tools they need to prevent it," said BC Health Minister Adrian Dix. This is part of our commitment to eliminate cervical cancer in this province in the next 10 years."
