A tempestuous year for weather in the capital
Last year, the weather in the capital was very diverse; From torrential rain to flash floods, three tornadoes and fire smoke. The only question now is what happens next?
Environment Canada released a list of the top ten weather events of the year on Wednesday.
In the first place of the year, there were unprecedented forest fires, some of which engulfed the country's capital in smoke.
"We've seen these extremes in the past, but they were separated from normal climate by decades," said David Phillips, senior climate scientist at Environment Canada.
But this issue is not only related to forest fires; A mild winter meant that the Rideau River never froze over for the first time in its 53-year history.
In addition, heavy rain in April, the hottest summer on record, and flash floods in August also occurred.
All this as a sign of what's to come, as Phillips predicts more extreme weather events to come.
Phillips also said that the human factor also contributes to these climate changes.
Although we're gearing up for a green Christmas in Ottawa, Phillips says there's hope for the Rideau River this year.
"I bet the Rideau River might freeze over this year," Phillips said.
