
A last-minute guide to voting in Canada’s federal election
Canada will soon decide who will form the next government after Monday’s federal election. Here are some important things to know in the final days before the election.
Voting requirements
You must be a Canadian citizen.
Be at least 18 years of age on Election Day.
Voting hours
Balloons will be open for 12 hours on Election Day. Polling station hours vary by time zone. You must be at your designated polling station.
Identification
A driver’s license or any other Canadian government-issued identification (federal, provincial/territorial or local) that includes your name, photo and current address.
If you do not have one, you must provide two pieces of identification, at least one of which must include your current address.
Alternatively, you can verify your identity and address by completing a declaration form. In this case, another person who has verified their identity and address with a government-issued document must accompany you. Each person can only vouch for one person.
Voter Information Card
This card is sent to your address after registration and contains the following information:
Polling location and time.
Access to the polling station.
The address of the nearest Elections Canada office for special voting.
Be sure to bring this card and identification documents with you.
Voter Information Services
Through these services, you can:
View information about your electoral district (map, past election results, etc.).
Find the list of candidates in your district, the address of the polling station and the local Elections Canada office.
Register on Election Day
If you are not registered, you can register at your designated polling station on Election Day.
Best time to vote
The best time to visit polling stations is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Busy hours are usually early in the morning and after 4 p.m.
