4 killed, 11 injured in shooting at family party in California; police searching for attacker
California authorities are asking the public for information to help identify the man who killed four people and wounded 11 others in a shooting at a family party at a Stockton restaurant.
Religious leaders in the Stockton area are planning to hold a memorial service for the victims and the injured on Sunday evening.
The victims ranged in age from 8 to 21, according to Heather Burnett, a spokeswoman for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. She said initial evidence suggests the shooting was "targeted."
Local authorities said the shooter has not yet been arrested and are asking for the public's help. Detectives are still trying to determine a possible motive for the shooting.
"If you have any information about this individual, please call us immediately. And if you are this individual, please come forward immediately," said San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas.
The shooting happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the restaurant, which shares a parking lot with several other businesses. Stockton is a city of about 320,000 people, 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Sacramento.
Deputy Mayor Jason Lee wrote on Facebook that the venue had hosted a birthday party for a child.
“This is Thanksgiving weekend, a time when families come together and celebrate. But tonight, unfortunately, the sky was bigger, with children and adults who are no longer with us,” said Mayor Christina Fugazi.
Recalling a shooting in the city a few years ago that “left seven people dead,” she called the events “unacceptable,” adding, “Stockton is better than this.”
Officials have not yet released further details about the condition of the injured.
“Families need to be together, not standing in the hospital with their loved ones praying they’re alive,” Fugazi said.
