Canada will raise the federal minimum wage next month

According to the Department of Labor and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the federal minimum wage is set to rise to $17.30 an hour starting April 1, 2024. On this date last year, the government raised the federal minimum wage from $15.55 to $16.65 an hour.

The federal minimum wage reportedly applies to employees and apprentices who work in the federally regulated private sector, including businesses such as banks, telecommunications companies, and air, sea, rail, and interstate transportation. . Many provinces are also raising their minimum hourly wages on April 1, including New Brunswick ($15.30), Yukon ($17.59), Newfoundland and Labrador ($15.60), Nova Scotia ($15.20) and Prince Edward Island ( $15.40).

Saskatchewan will also raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour on October 1st, and British Columbia will raise the minimum wage to $17.40 an hour on June 1st, up from $16.75 an hour in 2023.
