The Carney government's rescue in the budget vote

Carney’s budget narrowly passes parliament

The Liberal government of Mark Carney has successfully passed one of its most important political tests. The federal budget, seen as a crucial vote of confidence, passed the House of Commons by a margin of just two votes, saving Carney’s minority government from collapse and a snap election.

The vote was 170 to 168, according to the Canadian Press. It was one of the closest in recent years and a sign of the tense political climate in Ottawa.

Four MPs Abstain

While any vote could have changed the outcome, four MPs—including two Conservatives and two NDP MPs—absent from the vote. The decision effectively paved the way for the government’s victory.

Green Party Leader's Support

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May voted in favor of the budget after receiving commitments from Carney about the government's commitment to climate goals and the Paris Agreement. Her support played a key role in passing the budget through parliament.

Next step: Introducing the implementation bill

After receiving a vote of confidence, the government must introduce the budget implementation bill in parliament to implement the budget's provisions.

PM's trip to the UAE, then G20 summit

Carney will leave Ottawa today for the United Arab Emirates and then travel to Johannesburg to attend the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, according to the Prime Minister's Office.
