Armed robbers arrested in Cambridge Centre
Five armed robbers arrested at Cambridge Centre; police say links to other crimes
Waterloo police said five armed suspects were arrested Monday evening while robbing a jewelry store inside the Cambridge Centre shopping mall.
Initial report: Stolen vehicle
Around 5:20 p.m., mall security reported a stolen vehicle related to earlier crimes.
Officers entered the property and found five suspects armed with handguns, sledgehammers and gym bags in the act of robbery.
Suspects arrested quickly
Police said:
> “We took action to protect public safety and arrested all five individuals very quickly.”
Two loaded 9mm handguns were recovered at the scene.
Age and location of suspects
The suspects arrested are from Toronto and include:
A 22-year-old man
A 19-year-old man
A 17-year-old boy
Two 15-year-old boys
They face charges of armed robbery and are being held in custody pending a preliminary hearing.
Links to 4 other robberies
Police believe the group is linked to four other robberies and firearms-related crimes in Waterloo on the same day, as well as similar crimes in other provinces.
The investigation is ongoing and police say more charges are likely to be filed.
