Ontario speed camera collection to begin November 14
After passing legislation to eliminate speed cameras in Ontario on Thursday, Oct. 30, the Doug Ford government announced that all cameras will be removed by Nov. 14.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, as it is still unclear when the replacement measures that are supposed to replace the cameras will be implemented. Ford had previously said that the cameras would be replaced with methods such as bumps, squares and flashing signs, but the Minister of Transportation said that only temporary warning signs will be installed for now, and that it is not clear when further programs will be implemented.
The mayors of more than 20 cities, including Burlington, have opposed the removal of the cameras, warning that the move could create a safety vacuum until a safe alternative is found.
The leader of Ontario’s New Democratic Party has also warned that the premier will be held responsible if even one pedestrian or child is injured in the process.
The Ontario Liberal leader also stressed that removing the cameras goes against research from SickKids Hospital, Metropolitan Toronto University and the provincial police, all of which have shown that the cameras reduce traffic accidents.
