A giant pumpkin entered the polar bear enclosure!
Henry the polar bear meets a 1,400-lb pumpkin at Cochrane Habitat
Henry, the 1,200-pound polar bear at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Ontario, was surprised to find something even heavier than he is — a massive 1,400-lb pumpkin placed right in his enclosure.
Initially defensive, Henry later dug into the sweet, crunchy pumpkin, creating a series of adorable and funny moments captured in photos.
The pumpkin arrived by coincidence after a staff member spotted it being transported on the highway and contacted Aidie Creek Gardens, who said it would otherwise be composted.
Polar bears are adapted to eat mostly high-fat prey like baby seals, so pumpkins are essentially empty calories for them. Henry still managed to finish nearly a third of the giant gourd before settling into a food coma.
The Cochrane Habitat is the world’s only nonprofit sanctuary for polar bears that require lifelong human care.
