What we know so far about the suspected shooter in Charlie Kirk's murder
Utah authorities have released details about the suspected shooter, a day after the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls announced at a news conference Thursday morning that the weapon used in the shooting had been recovered. He said it was a high-powered assault rifle that was found in a wooded area where the suspect fled after the shooting.
Investigators have also collected shoe prints, a palm print and a forearm print for examination.
Bohls said the shooter’s motive is still unclear, but all leads and public reports are being investigated; 130 had been received as of Thursday morning.
Beau Mason, special commissioner for the Utah Department of Public Safety, said the suspect was “well camouflaged in a college environment” and appeared to be “college-aged.”
He detailed the shooter's movements:
"At 11:52 a.m., the suspect entered the campus. We tracked his movements from the entrance, the stairs, to the rooftop and the shooting location."
After the shooting, Mason said, his escape route from the campus was tracked to a residential neighborhood. Law enforcement is contacting residents in the area to look for more clues through doorbell camera footage and witnesses.
He added that they have good video footage of the suspect, but they are not releasing it at this time because they are using identification technology to match his identity.
The FBI's Salt Lake City office released an image of a "person of interest" in the case Thursday afternoon and asked the public for help identifying him.
What happened at the Charlie Kirk event?
On Wednesday, Charlie Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, as part of the Turning Point USA program. He was shot in the neck at about 2:20 p.m. EST while on stage talking about mass shootings.
Amy and Jeremy King, who were in the audience, told CTV News that the shooting occurred about 10 minutes into the question-and-answer session.
“It was the second question of the night, we were just getting ready and excited for the debate. But unfortunately, he didn’t get very far when we heard a sound. It took me a few moments to realize it was a gunshot,” Jeremy said.
“Then everyone fell to the ground,” he added. Footage showed hundreds of people fleeing the scene in panic.
Kirk was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in critical condition, but he later died.
US President Donald Trump announced his death on his social media account, writing:
“The great, even legendary, Charlie Kirk has passed away. No one understood the hearts of America’s youth like he did. He was loved and respected by all, especially me. And now he is no longer with us.”
Trump ordered flags across the United States to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.
