WestJet places order for 67 Boeing planes in fleet renewal plan
WestJet announced Wednesday it has ordered 67 Boeing aircraft as part of its fleet renewal program. The order includes seven 787-9 Dreamliners and 60 737-10 Max narrowbody aircraft.
The Calgary-based airline also has options to purchase 25 more 737-10 Max aircraft and four Dreamliners through 2034.
WestJet currently operates 193 passenger aircraft, with an order book of 123 jets and 40 options. The average age of the airline’s fleet is 10 years.
“With these additions, WestJet will have the largest order book of any Canadian airline and will double our Dreamliner fleet,” said WestJet CEO Alexis von Hohensbruch.
He added that the Boeing planes are expected to significantly improve fuel efficiency.
Boeing has said that the 737 Max family of planes will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 20 percent and reduce airframe maintenance costs by 14 percent.
