‘We have been devastated’: Brampton man calls for accountability after wife dies from sepsis following birth of newborn son

A Brampton man is demanding accountability after his wife died of sepsis after giving birth.

Ravinder Kaur Sidhu, a mother of three, gave birth to her son on June 18 at Mississauga’s Credit Valley Hospital. Although the delivery was normal, he suffered a laceration and stitches. Hours later, she developed a fever, severe chills and pelvic pain, but according to her husband, she didn’t receive any antibiotics for 30 hours.

Sidhu says warnings from her family and even her ICU nurse sister were ignored, and the bacterial infection eventually spread to her uterus and leg. After several surgeries, including a hysterectomy, she died June 23 at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital.

Her husband says the death was preventable and the hospital failed to provide care. He has sued the hospital and the College of Physicians of Ontario and has launched an online petition with thousands of signatures calling for an independent review.

Ontario's Ministry of Health has described the incident as "tragic and concerning," and Credit Valley Hospital has expressed its condolences and said the case is under full review.

"She was our whole life. They waited 30 hours for a simple antibiotic. This neglect must not happen again," said Gurinder Sidhu, who now has three young children and an uncertain future for his family.
