Vehicles in Canada recalled for faulty brakes, headlamps. Here’s why
Several automakers have issued recalls this week for various vehicles due to performance issues in areas such as headlights and brakes.
Vehicles being recalled:
General Motors
General Motors has issued a recall update to a previous recall that includes brands such as BrightDrop, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.
The issue involves software that may cause the low-beam headlights to not come on in the dark if the multifunction switch is in the “off” or “parking” position. This could reduce driver visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
More than 270,000 vehicles are affected by the recall. GM is advising owners to visit their dealerships to update the body control module software.
GM also announced that nearly 6,000 Chevrolet Equinox EVs in Canada are being recalled due to a brake defect. The defect involves software in the brake control module that may prevent the vehicle from slowing down or stopping when using cruise control.
Tesla
Tesla is recalling 2024 and 2025 Model 3, S, X and Y vehicles due to a software issue. The issue could cause a computer circuit to fail, causing the rearview camera to malfunction. The defect could violate Canadian regulations on displaying the rearview camera image when reversing.
About 25,000 vehicles are affected by the recall. Tesla has released a remote software update to fix the issue and will notify owners.
Kia
Kia is recalling the Niro EV due to a risk of water entering the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) module and causing it to rust. The issue can reduce braking power and increase stopping distances.
Niro EV models from 2019 to 2022 are affected by the issue, affecting nearly 2,200 vehicles. Kia is advising owners to take the issue to a dealer to have the problem fixed.
Kia is also recalling the Sorento model due to a software issue that could cause the headlights and taillights to go out. The issue affects 7,404 vehicles from the 2024 to 2025 model years, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models.
Fiat Chrysler
Fiat Chrysler is recalling Jeep Cherokee models from 2017 to 2019 due to improper installation of the powertrain unit (PTU). The defect could cause the PTU to become damaged and fail, resulting in a loss of power to the wheels and the possibility of the vehicle moving in park without the parking brake applied.
About 20,000 vehicles are affected.
Honda
Honda is recalling just five 2024 Acura ZDXs due to a defect in the front passenger-side stabilizer bar bracket retaining bolts. The defect could cause the bolts to loosen and damage high-voltage cables or battery cooling lines.
Honda is advising this limited number of owners to take the problem to a dealer.
