There’s $1 million in gold hidden somewhere in Canada. Here’s how to find it
Canada is now witnessing a real adventure: a “great treasure hunt” hosted by The Northern Miner newspaper, challenging participants to solve puzzles to find a prize worth $1 million in gold. The grand prize is a waterproof box containing a code to receive 217 one-ounce gold coins.
Rules and conditions
Only one of the organizers knows where the prize is.
None of the locations are near the organizers’ or their families’ homes or property.
Prohibited locations: private property, underwater, tunnels or mines, on man-made structures, near cemeteries or dangerous places.
No special equipment or athletic ability required.
Participants must follow safety precautions, such as bringing a charged phone, having a companion, being aware of weather conditions, and being respectful of the environment.
Clues
At the heart of the competition is a 52-line poem filled with cryptic hints to the location of the treasure. The poem mentions natural landscapes, mountains, forests, and rivers, as well as metals, minerals, and even human landmarks.
Geology: References to the Canadian Shield and the Rocky Mountains.
Plants: Birch, pine, and eastern and western cypress.
Water: From rivers and waterfalls to tranquil lakes.
Metals: Mentions of copper, zinc, and iron, along with indirect references to gold.
Human landmarks: The fictional statue of Flin Flon in Manitoba, the town of Bathurst, and large coins like the Big Nickel in Sudbury.
End of the poem
The final section of the poem refers to a quiet, secluded place where “the grass grew tall” and “secrets lay hidden beneath the earth.” The last line even suggests that the code box may have magnetic properties, an invisible clue that reveals the location of the treasure.
Organizers remind:
“Remember, the real treasure is not just gold; it’s the adventure, the stories, and the safe return home to tell them.”
