King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Ottawa for an official visit to Canada.

The pilot raised the royal insignia in a gesture of honor upon landing.

The royal couple were greeted by dignitaries and indigenous leaders.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the royal visit at a press conference after his election victory, saying the visit “reaffirms Canada’s sovereignty” in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s threat to annex Canada.

King Charles is scheduled to deliver his Throne Speech in Parliament tomorrow. But today, Canada has rolled out the red carpet for the royal couple in Ottawa.

1:45 p.m. — The King opens a street hockey game

The Aztlan Ballet performed in Lansdowne Park before the king arrived. The word Aztlan means "land of the gods" in the Aztec language.

Several cultural groups will perform at the event to showcase Canada's cultural mosaic.

Children from the African Hockey Association and the Gatineau Valley Women's Hockey Association will participate in a street hockey game, and King Charles will throw the puck down.

Honorary coaches for the game include former Senators defenseman Chris Phillips and Olympic gold medalist in soccer Desiree Scott.

Standing in line to greet the king are Stephen Guilbeau, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, and Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of Ottawa.

The king and queen will participate in a tree planting ceremony. According to a government statement, the gesture is a symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

This is the fifth tree planted by King Charles III at Rideau Hall, and the second tree planted by the royal couple together.

Commemorative tree planting has been a tradition in Canada since the early 20th century.

The king and queen boarded their motorcade and headed for the first of a two-day series of events.

The event will be held in Lansdowne Park along the Rideau Canal and is open to the public.

They will meet with Canadians, some of whom have traveled long distances to meet the royal family.

They will also visit stalls by local vendors and artists. Government officials say the stalls symbolize diverse Canadian values, including cultural diversity, inclusiveness and sustainability.
