The federal government is looking to bring dozens of foreign grocery chains to Canada
The federal government continues to seek to bring foreign food operators to Canada in an effort to increase competition and provide people with more food options.
According to Kha's report, the information shows that the federal government is considering dozens of possible candidate companies to come to Canada and compete with the three big companies, Lab La, Metro and Sobeys.
The current list includes 12 chain stores, mostly located in Europe, except for one in the United States, Holding, which has 470 discount stores. Other grocery chain stores targeted by the federal government are located in Germany, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Norway and the Netherlands.
These foreign chain stores are:
- From France: Les Mousquetaires
- From Germany: Aldi, Lidl, Edeka Group, and Rewe Group
- From the Netherlands: X5 Retail Group
- From Norway: Reitangruppen
- From Portugal: Jerónimo Martins
- From Spain: Distribuidora Internacional de Alimentación, and Mercadona
- From Turkey: BIM Birlesik Magazalar
- From the U.S.: Holding
Canada's Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne launched the list last fall after criticizing the big three grocers for failing to disclose the causes of food inflation.
Canada, like many countries, experienced fluctuations in food prices due to various factors such as supply chain disruptions, weather events affecting agriculture and changes in consumer demand.
