The City of Toronto plans to dismantle a homeless encampment near Kensington Market
The city of Toronto has announced its intention to evacuate a homeless camp near Kensington Market due to the immediate and ongoing safety risks it poses to the public.
In an official statement, the city declared that the camp on Bellevue Street, near College Street, will be cleared on Saturday morning.
Russell Baker, the spokesperson for the city, stated in the announcement: "This is the final solution, and we must address the accumulation of flammable materials at this location, which poses significant risks to both those residing in the camp and those in the surrounding area, including the church located at this address, 'St. Stephen-in-the-Fields.'"
Baker added that approximately eight individuals still reside at the site, and they were given notice on November 21.
