Suspect in assassination of Charlie Kirk arrested

The man accused of killing Charlie Kirk has been arrested on charges of first-degree murder, weapons offenses and obstruction of justice. Authorities believe he acted alone and the investigation is ongoing, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said.

This is breaking news and more details will be released later.

OREM, Utah — Tyler Robinson, 22, the prime suspect in the shooting of Charlie Kirk, had previously spoken out against conservative activist views and told his family he was responsible for the shooting. The Utah governor said at a news conference that evidence, including the engravings on recovered bullets and Robinson’s chat app messages, linked him to the attack.

“We got him,” Cox said on “Fox & Friends” after President Donald Trump announced his arrest.

Robinson acted alone and the investigation is ongoing. His arrest followed a day-and-a-half manhunt that stalled early on as authorities appealed for information. The assassination drew public attention because of Kirk's influence in conservative circles and his closeness to Trump, as well as concerns about rising political violence in the United States.

Governor Cox urged young people to resolve political differences through dialogue and finding common ground, saying, "It's a choice."

A family member of Robinson shared information he had told a family friend with authorities, which helped identify the suspect.

Robinson's father recognized him in FBI photos and asked him to turn himself in. He initially refused but later agreed. The family's pastor also helped facilitate his surrender.

Authorities have not yet released a motive for the killing, but evidence is in the case, including engravings on the bullets containing a political threat and messages about the gun and its accessories. Robinson's clothing matched what he was wearing the day before.

Kirk was shot and killed in what the governor called a "political assassination." He was a co-founder of Turning Point USA and was speaking at a debate at the University of Utah when the shooting happened. Trump called him a "good, influential man" and said he planned to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Video footage of the attack, which was posted on social media, shows Kirk being shot while speaking into a microphone, and the crowd in the audience scattering in panic. The gunman was shot from behind and the suspect then disappeared into the crowd.

The debate, which was about gun violence, has sparked a backlash on campus, with an online petition seeking to block Kirk from attending garnering nearly 1,000 signatures. The university, which emphasizes free speech, said it was committed to constructive dialogue and intellectual inquiry.

Kirk's casket was flown from Utah to Phoenix, and Trump plans to attend the funeral.
